Psychotherapy with Dr Tom Cerni

As an endorsed Counselling Psychologist and Educational and Developmental Psychologist, Tom brings extensive experience to his psychotherapy services.

Tom is dedicated to helping clients find clarity and confidence, particularly through pivotal life transitions. Whether experiencing changes in your personal life, family dynamics, career, or relationships, Tom emphasises strategies that are aligned with your core values. His tailored approach helps clients gain deep insights about themselves through their cognitive, social-emotional, physical and spiritual health to strengthen their relationships, and find a balance in their work and family life, ensuring that every life transition becomes a positive opportunity for personal growth and learning.

In his therapeutic practice sessions, Tom takes an eclectic approach to therapy. Depending on the presenting issues, he draws on evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Constructive Thinking to achieve desired outcomes.

These specialised techniques equip clients with new ways of approaching life’s challenges that minimise stress and enhance problem-solving capabilities. Depending on their presenting issues and transition phase, Tom is looking for clients interested in making long-term commitments, ranging from 3 to 12+ months.

DR CERNI’S EXPERIENCE

Dr Cerni’s Extensive Experience

Tom’s professional journey began in education before transitioning into psychology, where he quickly made his mark. As the inaugural Educational and Developmental Psychologist at The Scots College, Sydney, he developed the school’s Counselling Service from the ground up, transforming it into the centre of excellence it is today. He has since assisted other educational facilities in establishing their successful counselling departments.

In his PhD research, Tom explored Cognitive-Experiential Theory, which suggests that all people operate through two distinct information-processing systems—an ‘experiential system,’ that learns automatically from experience, and a ‘rational system,’ which is a verbal reasoning system. Depending on the person, different situations, and emotional involvement, these systems continually shape our thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviours.

In recent years, Tom completed the General Management Program and Managing Health Care Delivery Program through the Harvard Business School, earning him alumni status.
